Today at Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, Indiana, the third and final SMX Next – Motocross Scouting Moto Combine event of the summer will take place. Over 25 top A and B athletes from across the country will gather to race and experience what is basically an AMA Pro Motocross Championship simulation day. These riders will have qualifying and motos on the track, as well as time with media, on track breakdown time with legendary coaches of the sport, and more. As we have mentioned before, we do crown an overall podium, each top three rider getting a medal, but there is not series standings or championship finish. Racing in a strong field in front of a ton of OEM and industry personnel can provide an opportunity for a look at the next stars of the sport.
Here is the entry list for today’s race.

Some riders are fresh off of the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, others are returning from injuries, and others coming from overseas for a shot at impressing OEMs here in the U.S. for a potential ride. Lots of storylines to follow and lots of fast names to keep track of.
On top of the Scouting Moto Combine, this weekend’s Pro Motocross round also includes the fourth round of the six-round Women’s Motocross Championship (WMX). Today (Friday) we will have the first moto race and tomorrow (Saturday) we will have the second moto race. The second moto being Saturday means getting the WMX field in front of a bigger crowd.
Lachlan Turner (Yamaha) enters today's race with the points lead over Mikayla Nielsen (Honda). Turner won rounds two and three after Nielsen took the overall win at round one in California. Turner, Kyleigh Stallings (Kawasaki), and Jordan Jarvis (Yamaha) are all coming off a week at Loretta Lynn's ready from more gate drops. One more thing to note is Jamie Astudillo (KTM) signed with the Dirt Bike Depot WMR KTM Racing Team for the remaining three rounds of WMX. Astudillo and the DBD crew share several sponsors (bike brands, gear, helmet, etc.) and this is really cool to see for the experienced WMX racer and the newer-on-the-scene DBD team.
Check out the top 15 in the championship entering the weekend. Again, moto one today, moto two tomorrow.
So, here's what happened Friday at Ironman Raceway.

First Qualifying Session
After five minutes of start practice on the grates, the field got the green flag to start their qualifying session. The track had a good bit of mulch added onto it and it was watered yesterday evening before being tilled and ripped up. This morning it was deep but nothing out of the ordinary as riders got on the gas. By the end of the session, Caden Dudney topped the session with a 2:03.467, barely edging out his fellow Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing rider Carson Wood, who had a 2:03.992. The #40 and #260 machines put in the only two laps under 2:06 as third-fastest Luke Fauser’s fast lap was a 2:06.065. Off their respective big weeks at Loretta Lynn’s, Enzo Temmerman (2:06.518) and Deacon Denno (2:06.980) rounded out the top five.

Second Qualifying Session
In the second SMX Next – Motocross qualifying session, it was Carson Wood with the fastest lap. Wood’s 2:04.405 topped the session over Caden Dudney’s 2:05.727, Luke Fauser’s 2:06.703, Landon Gibson’s 2:07.065, and Alvin Hillan’s 2:07.644, who rounded out the top five. Enzo Temmerman was eighth fastest in the session (a 2:08.046), followed by Deacon Denno in ninth (a 2:08.425). Dudney, Wood, Fauser, Hillan, and a few other riders were using a neat jump line in the turn leading up to the jump that used to be Godzilla. They would hit the inside line in the turn and launch off the inside pile into the first roller then power through the rest of the rollers and blast off up the hill. See below for photos and a clip of Fauser doing this line.
In terms of overall qualifying, Dudney’s 2:03.468 from the first session top’s Wood’s 2:03.992 from the first session. Fauser, Temmerman, and Denno round out the top five overall.
The first moto will be at 2 p.m. local time today. If you are near or at the facility, come check out the racing.

WMX
Qualifying Session
After a handful of minutes of practice starts, the WMX field was on track for their only qualifying session of the day. Series points leader Lachlan Turner was easily the fastest on track, putting down a 2:13.724 fast lap. The next best lap was a 2:17.024, which came from Mikayla Nielsen, then a 2:18.365 by Charli Cannon as Kyleigh Stallings (2:22.929) and Jordan Jarvis (2:24.281). Turner was doing the line the SMX Next – Motocross riders were doing in the session right before them, jumping the inside roller in the turn into the rollers leading up the hill of what was Godzilla.
The first WMX moto will be today at 12:30 p.m. local time, and remember, their second moto will be tomorrow morning.
WMX
First Moto
The first WMX moto got their sight lap and then got ready for their gate drop. The gates dropped and it was Lachlan Turner who quickly got into the lead by the holeshot stripe. She did not get the best jump, but she was able to finagle the first turn to come out in the lead. From there, she checked out and led wire to wire. Behind her, Mikayla Nielsen and Charli Cannon were battling for second. They banged bars in the turn exiting the woods section, but Nielsen was fending off the fight from the #7 well. However, one lap later, in the same turn, Nielsen slid out, handing over second to Cannon. Nielsen would remount and remain in third, although too far behind to make any pass attempts to reclaim second. Behind them, Kyleigh Stallings was running in a solo fourth as Jordan Jarvis and Jamie Astudillo battled for fifth. After a few laps, Jarvis made a move stick. Turner would take the race win by 22.250 seconds over Cannon, as Nielsen rounded out the podium. Stallings and Jarvis remained fourth and fifth, respectively.
The second moto will take place tomorrow. Up next on track is the Pro Motocross media interviews and riding session. After that are the two SMX Next – Motocross motos—both of which will run this afternoon.
SMX Next – Motocross
First Moto
Carson Wood got the early race lead and was holding strong until he made a mistake and slid out, handing the lead over to his teammate Caden Dudney. Dudney would have pressure from Enzo Temmerman basically down to the checkered flag, but he would stay strong for the race win. After his mistake, Wood would need to fight back from about fifth or so. He got into a battle with Deacon Denno, which would eventually result in the #260 making a pass into third. Luke Fauser was fifth after he bested Owen Covell. Behind them was Landon Gibson, who charged from a poor start. Dudney took the win as Temmerman and Wood rounded out the podium, followed by Denno and Fauser.

First Moto
The second moto got underway, and it was McKayden Fitch and Landon Gibson out front early, trailed by Enzo Temmerman and Deacon Denno. By the time the field got halfway through the first lap, Denno made his way into the lead. Denno would lead the first three laps before Temmerman would take over the race lead. Yamaha teammates Caden Dudney and Carson Wood were both buried in the start and had to work through the field. Late in the race, Gibson caught and ran down Temmerman out front. They would go back and forth before eventually, Gibson bested his competitor and pulled away for the win. Temmerman came through second as Landon Hartz pulled of a pass late in the race to take over third. Luke Fauser, who came through fourth, said he got a flat tire around halfway through the final lap. Denno rounded out the top five after dropped back a few positions. Dudney was charging forward late in the race, after being outside the top 20 early on, and he eventually finished eighth. Wood came through 13th.
In terms of the overall, Temmerman's 2-2 moto finishes claimed the overall win. Gibsons's 6-1 finishes landed the #23 machine second overall and Fauser's 5-4 finishes landed third overall. Denno's 4-5 was fourth and Dudney's 1-8 was fifth overall.
